Background of the study:
Body fat distribution is a key indicator of health that may vary significantly according to socioeconomic status. In Ijebu-East, Ogun State, disparities in income, education, and lifestyle are believed to influence how body fat is accumulated and stored. Recent studies have shown that individuals with lower socioeconomic status tend to have a higher prevalence of central adiposity, which is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders (Ogun, 2023). Moreover, dietary habits, access to recreational facilities, and healthcare disparities further contribute to these variations (Balogun, 2024). Environmental factors and cultural practices also play a role in shaping body composition. The current research seeks to examine the correlation between socioeconomic status and body fat distribution, providing insights into the underlying factors that drive these differences. Such insights are critical for the design of effective public health interventions and policy measures aimed at reducing health inequalities in Ogun State (Adedayo, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
There is a significant gap in research regarding the relationship between socioeconomic status and body fat distribution in Ijebu-East. The lack of localized data impedes the development of targeted health interventions to address obesity and related disorders. This study aims to clarify these associations, providing a basis for informed public health strategies.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess the patterns of body fat distribution among different socioeconomic groups.
  • To determine the relationship between socioeconomic status and central adiposity.
  • To propose strategies for reducing health disparities linked to body fat distribution.

Research questions:

  • How does socioeconomic status affect body fat distribution in Ijebu-East?
  • What are the patterns of adiposity among different income groups?
  • What interventions can mitigate the negative health impacts associated with abnormal fat distribution?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Lower socioeconomic status is associated with higher central adiposity.
  • H₂: There is a significant correlation between socioeconomic factors and body fat distribution.
  • H₃: Targeted interventions can improve body fat distribution among disadvantaged groups.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it highlights the link between socioeconomic status and body fat distribution, offering valuable insights for public health policies aimed at reducing obesity-related risks in Ijebu-East (Ogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing the relationship between body fat distribution and socioeconomic status among residents of Ijebu-East Local Government Area. Broader regional or national comparisons are not included.

Definitions of terms:

  • Body fat distribution: The pattern in which fat is stored in different parts of the body.
  • Socioeconomic status: An individual’s economic and social position, based on income, education, and occupation.
  • Central adiposity: The accumulation of fat in the abdominal area.
